Carolina Panthers at Houston Texans (Thu – 8:20 PM ET)

Week three of the NFL season kicks off with the Thursday night matchup between the 2-0 Panthers and the 1-1 Texans. After going 5-11 last season, the Panthers are one of the early surprises of 2021 with their big win in week two against the New Orleans Saints. Panthers quarterback Sam Darnold looks more worthy of the 2018 third overall draft pick with his new team, making use of skill position weapons like star running back Christian McCaffrey and fellow ex-Jet, wide receiver Robby Anderson. The Texans got off to a good start with a win in week one but lost the game and their quarterback, Tyrod Taylor, in week two, raising more (ahem) questions about their QB depth chart. Fortunately, rookie quarterback Davis Mills looked competent in his NFL debut as he replaced Taylor, throwing for 102 yards, 1 TD, and 1 INT in the second half against the Browns. However, asking the 2021 third-round pick to start against a Panthers defense that has only surrendered 21 points in two weeks (best in the NFL) is a tall order. This game will most likely hinge on Mills’ play, do you think he has what it takes to make this a contest?
Vegas Line: Panthers favored by 7.5 points

Upcoming Contest Question: Texans QB Davis Mills is taking over for Tyrod Taylor. What will be his QB Rating?
Quarterback passer rating has been the NFL’s official metric to measure a quarterback’s passing efficiency since 1973. Performances are graded on a scale of 0-158.3 based on a combination of passing attempts, completions, yards, touchdowns, and interceptions. In 2020, the league’s average passer rating was 93.6, the highest ever. Last week against the Browns, Davis Mills’ passer rating was 58.1. If he can top that this week against the Panthers’ defense, he could give the Texans a chance to pull off the upset at home.

Green Bay Packers at San Francisco 49ers (Sun – 8:20 PM ET)

Sunday night’s primetime game features a possible playoff matchup between the 1-1 Green Bay Packers and the 2-0 San Francisco 49ers. After a disastrous week one performance, Aaron Rodgers and the Packers rebounded with a convincing win over the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football in week two. This week they play a 49ers team with a formidable defensive line that features Nick Bosa and Dee Ford coming off the edge, which could make it challenging for Rodgers to find the time to load up and get the ball down field. Look for the Packers to mix in some slants and screens to get the ball out quickly, which could mean a big day for slot receiver Randall Cobb who has been reunited with the Packers after two years in Texas (Dallas and Houston). On the 49ers’ side, one of the most intriguing questions will be rookie QB Trey Lance’s snap count. After throwing a touchdown in week one against the Lions, he did not take a single snap in week two. If Jimmy Garoppolo struggles to keep up with Rodgers, the 49ers may look to Lance’s dual-threat dynamism to give their offense a spark.
Vegas Line: 49ers favored by 3.5 points
